Nano Banana Version Logic: Gemini Image Series Naming Decoded

Explaining the version numbering logic of Google's Gemini Image series (Nano Banana), and why Nano Banana 2 didn't surpass Nano Banana Pro.

Nano Banana Version Logic

First, beginning with Gemini 2.5, Google’s Gemini series essentially established a lineup of two flagship models plus one image model:

  1. Gemini Pro (2.5/3/3.1): The flagship large model for each generation.
  2. Gemini Flash (2.5/3): The speed and cost-efficiency focused secondary model.
  3. Gemini Image (2.5/3/3.1): The corresponding visual generation model (also subdivided into Flash and Pro versions, though release timing may not be synchronized).

And Nano Banana, which people often mention, is actually the product codename for Gemini Image.

Timeline Evolution

Let’s trace its evolution along the timeline:

First Generation: The original Nano Banana essentially corresponds to Gemini 2.5 Flash Image. Since it used the Flash architecture, people at the time found the output quality relatively underwhelming.

Explosive Debut: With the release of Gemini 3 Pro, Nano Banana Pro debuted, corresponding to the true Gemini 3 Pro Image. With maximum compute and parameters, feedback across the internet was excellent (Pro tier model).

Current Iteration: With the recent update to Gemini 3.1 Pro, the image model has evolved to Nano Banana 2, whose official identity is actually Gemini 3.1 Flash Image (Flash tier model).

Why Gen 2 Didn’t Surpass Pro

This explains the earlier confusion: why does it feel like Nano Banana 2 (Gen 2) doesn’t seem to surpass Nano Banana Pro (Gen 1)?

The reason is simple: both Nano Banana 2 and Nano Banana Pro are products of the Gemini 3 series—they come from the same lineage, so neither can truly outdo the other.

Google’s current product strategy also confirms this: Nano Banana 2 has already replaced the old version as the default base model. If you want to use Nano Banana Pro, you need to select Pro when sending text in the Gemini Chat window—selecting Fast or Think will give you Nano Banana 2.

Naming Convention Summary

Product CodenameReal IdentityModel Tier
Nano Banana (Gen 1)Gemini 2.5 Flash ImageFlash
Nano Banana ProGemini 3 Pro ImagePro
Nano Banana 2Gemini 3.1 Flash ImageFlash
Nano Banana 2 Pro (future)Gemini 3.5 Pro ImagePro

In Nano Banana’s naming system, a simple numeric iteration (like “2”) represents the base Flash Image model—only with the Pro suffix does it represent the flagship Pro Image model.

So, following this logic, when Nano Banana 2 Pro is released in the future, that will be when we welcome Gemini 3.5 Pro.
